Muslims oppose calls to ban Adhan & Uniform Civil Code

After BJP Government came in power, Indian Muslims are facing a threat to their religious freedom with some Hindu organizations pitching for a ban on use of loudspeakers during Fajr adhan.
“This is something unacceptable to us. How can you take away our fundamental right to follow our religion?” Muslim Scholars told to media.

“Today they are calling for ban on Adhan and tomorrow they will ask us to convert to Hinduism. Such things create insecurity in the minds of Muslims.”

chairman of the Press Council of India Justice Markandey Katju claimed that one of the reasons for the backwardness of Muslims was that there was no modernization of their personal law.

“The issue of a uniform civil code has recently been raised. I am fully in support of a uniform civil code,” Katju, a former Supreme Court judge, said in a recent article.

Last week, In a controversial demand that may spark widespread uproar, a less popular Hindutva outfit has called for a strict ban on dawn Adhan (Fajr prayer call from Masjids) across India.
Hunderds of Hindutva activists including a controversial swamiji, who had earlier tried to commit suicide, staged a protest in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner in Mangalore to pressurize the authorities concerned to strictly impose ban on Adhan during early morning.

Muslim fears were materialized after the Hindus in Thane district in Maharashtra state followed those in Karnataka and staged a protest demanding ban on use of loudspeakers in mosques for morning prayers.

Right wing Hindu groups such as Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal and Shiv Sena have been campaigning in central India for the last few years to stop Muslims from offering prayers in the open on Fridays and on some special occasions, when all the Muslims can’t be accommodated in mosques due to large number of participants.
