Hyderabad, January 30: Grit and determination reflected in their faces as a group of Muslim girls from a school in the Old City stunned the crowd at the Quli Qutub Shah Stadium on Sunday with their perfect display of martial arts.
Students of several schools had gathered for the culmination of Deeni Talim rally, an annual inter-school event held by Markazi Anjuman-e-Quadria, an organization aiming to inculcate religious and moral values in school students. This was the 49th edition of the event where students from around 45 schools in all participated in competitions like general knowledge quiz, debates and march past in the past few weeks. The event concluded on Sunday with a rally in which students and teachers of around 25 schools took part holding placard and banners displaying their school names. The rally ended at Quli Qutub Shah Stadium. Apart from the martial arts presentation, the day’s programme comprised march past and distribution of prizes to the winners of various competitions.
The agile girls of St Maaz High School, Saidabad stole the show. The martial arts demonstration was presented by a group of ten girls belonging to the age group of 12 to 15 years. Syeda Faroza Jabeen, one of the students who participated, said, “We have been training in Vovinam, a Vietnamese martial art, at school for the last four years.” The school has been encouraging its students to take up training for self defense and empowerment by providing it at no extra fees. “As of now, over 100 girls undergo Vovinam training in school,” said Mahmood Sajid, principal, St Maaz High School.
Another highlight of the day’s event was the human pyramid formed by a group of 11 boys from New Khulq Boys Town High School.
