Muslim Personal Law Board holds emergency meet on ‘instant triple talaq ban’ bill

New Delhi: To oppose the bill that bans Triple Talaq, All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has called an emergency meeting on Sunday for its committee.

“Yes, the board has convened an emergency meeting to be held at Darul-Uloom Nadwatul Ulema (Islamic seminary) on the proposed bill,” confirmed AIMPLB spokesperson Zafaryab Jilani.

However, two prominent Shia clerics would not be attending the meeting, quotes Hindustan Times.

The new bill is to be taken up in The Winter Session of Parliament which makes the Islamic divorce practice of Triple Talaq an offense, moreover, it will sentence the accused in jail for three years with a fine.

The Union Cabinet earlier this month cleared a bill that criminalizes the instant triple talaq. The Supreme Court, in August, by a majority of 3:2, had ruled the practice as “void”, “illegal” and “unconstitutional”.
