Guwahati,May 17:It’s pleasant that overwhelming majority of the newly
elected Muslim MLAs in Assam is well educated – 22 out of the total
number of 28 Muslim MLAs are at least graduates.
Ten are graduates with some holding degrees in professional courses like engineering and law while 12 are postgraduates.
Educational qualification of the new Muslim MLAs in Assam is ranging
from 5th pass to MA and LLB.
There is only one who is undermatric — Jamaluddin Ahmed of Congress (Badarpur constituency) is 5th grader.
There are five who are undergraduates.
The rest 22 are graduates/postgraduates.
Hafiz Bashir Ahmed Qasmi (AIUDF) is MA (Gold Medalist) from Gauhati
University.
He was declared as the best postgraduate student of the
university.
Qasmi has won Bilasipara West constituency.
Gul Akhtara Begum (AIUDF), who has won from Bilashipara East, is M.Sc. in
mathematics and was Lecturer in a college.
She is also the president of AIUDF women’s front. Monowar Hussain (AIUDF) winning from Goalpara West is MA and LLB and he is also the president of Goalpara Bar Association.
Rafiqul Islam (AIUDF) winning from Jania is a Gold Medalist in Arabic from Gauhati University. He also holds a degree from Deoband and pursuing Ph.D. in Gauhati University.
Sherman Ali (AIUDF) is BA and social worker while Ali Hossain is MA and was the principal of Koyakuch College before contesting the election.
Probably the youngest among the Muslim MLAs is Badruddin Ajmal’s son
Abdur Rahman Ajmal who won from Salmara South.
Ajmal junior, 27, is MA in Islamic Law from Jamia Milia Islamia. He also holds a degree from Darul Uloom Deoband.
It’s heartening that the era of illiterate lawmakers has gone.\
But will the educated deliver for their constituencies? Only time will
answer.
However, with the increase in number and considering the qualification of the Muslim MLAs, better performance can be rightly expected from these 28 Muslim MLAs.
