A Muslim girl (15) studying in a French School has been stopped from attending classes for wearing a long black skirt which was seen as against French law which guarantees secularism.
The message on the Twitter “I wear my skirt as I like” appeared after which this dispute was made public in the girl’s local newspaper Charleville-Mezieres.
The school teachers said that skirt is not the only issue. The issued was that the student dressed the skirt as a mark of her Islamic faith which is in contravention to the 2004 law which bars the exhibition of religious symbols in schools. The name of the student is Ms. Sarah. She was wearing skirt and Islamic headgears along with four other girls. The other four girls removed their headscarves before entering the school. The students were advised to change their dresses in a neutral fashion. Sarah stopped attending classes. Patrice Dutot, inspector of the Ardennes Academy told that it was a willful display of religious identity.
France puts a ban on manifestation of ostentatious religious symbols in schools. This issue has cropped up after the brutal attacked by 3 Muslim activities in January. The politicians of France want to preserve the French identity by following secularism. Muslim gitls who refused to remove their head scarves have stopped going to school due to the enforcement of French law passed in 2004.
