Muslim clerics to protest Congress leaders’ Azamgarh visit

Lucknow, February 03:Expressing resentment over alleged harassment of youth from the minority community by police on the pretext of tackling terror, a Muslim clerics’ organisation Tuesday said it would hold protests against Congress leaders, who would visit Azamgarh district.

“We will sport black badges and will also wave black flags at the Congress leaders, including Digvijay Singh and other party leaders, who are coming to visit Sanjarpur town in Azamgarh,” Ulema Council’s general secretary Tahir Madni told reporters in Azamgarh, some 300 km from Lucknow.

“Actually, they (Congress leaders) are not coming to console the family members of those who have been implicated in false terror cases, instead the visit by the party leaders is driven by politics,” he alleged.

Digvijay Singh and other leaders of the party’s state unit are to Wednesday visit Sanjarpur town – the home of two alleged Indian Mujahideen (IM) operatives Atif and Chhota Sajid, killed in September 2008 by the police during the Batla House shootout in New Delhi.

Since then, the council has been demanding probes by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the judiciary into the incident.

“Earlier, Digvijay Singh and other Congress leaders had assured us that a judicial enquiry would be conducted into the Batla House shootout. But till today nothing has happened,” said Madni.

Meanwhile, Digvijay Singh, who arrived in Lucknow Tuesday, told reporters that he would visit Azamgarh as per his schedule.

“During my visit to Azamgarh, I will meet anyone who wants to talk to me,” he said.
