“Discrimination and prejudice have kept Muslims away from education; this is a fact which no one can deny.” Mr. Harsh Mandar, Director Centre of Equity Studies, New Delhi said this while addressing a one day Workshop on “Muslim Children’s Issues and Right to Education” jointly organized by the Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion & Inclusive Policy and Save the children at Maulana Azad National Urdu University. He said discrimination is a reality and we need to eradicate it. Muslim children comprise only 1.4% in IIM’s and IIT’s out of the total population. He also talked about the barriers to entry to schooling as continuous discrimination. Giving example of the biased attitude towards Muslims he said “one girl was raped in Delhi and there was a storm in the country. What about those 72 brutal rapes in Kashmir in the area called Kunamphoswara.”
Dr. Khwaja M. Shahid, Pro Vice–Chancellor in his presidential remarks said child labour is really a complex issue and it has to be tackled in a good way. He said policies have to be converted into actions. Societal support is the need of the hour. We have to develop high level competency in Education so that we can face challenges. He concluded his speech by saying that feeling of discrimination is very dangerous than the discrimination itself.
Chief Guest Mr. Abid Rasool Khan, Chairman, A.P. State Minorities Commission in his address said most of the districts in AP have not initiated the programmes under PM’s 15 point programme.
