Hyderabad: At 6 a.m. on 26th September 1908, the sky of Hyderabad became completely dark and started pouring in water. At 2 p.m., rain intensified. Till 6 p.m., river Musi was flooded with water. The tank bunds of the nearby tanks of Vikharabad, Chevella, Moinabad etc were damaged and water started coming into Musi river. Water entered in Afzalgunj, Husaini Alam, Shaheedgunj, Ghansimiyan Bazaar, Darulshifa, Jambagh areas.
Hundreds of trees were uprooted. Afzalgunj Hospital collapsed. Hundreds of persons saved their lives by climbing on to the trees in front of the hospital.
Flood continued for three days. The flood water reached Shah Ali Banda. It claimed nearly 15000 lives and more than 2000 houses were washed away.
The then ruler of the State, Nawab Mir Mehboob Ali Khan opened the gates of his palace at Purani Haveli. He provided shelter and food to the victims.
It may be mentioned that the event of flood completed 110 years today.
