New Delhi: A murder witness was gunned down by unidentified persons at Mahindra Park area of north-west Delhi after which two suspects have been detained for questioning in connection with the killing, police said today.
Victim Jeet Kumar, who was complainant and main witness in a murder case in July, sustained three bullet injuries and died on the spot last night. Police had received a call around 9.30 pm last about shooting of a youth outside a liquor vend in Mahindra Park.
Police shifted Jeet having bullet injuries on head, leg and chest, to Babu Jagjivan Ram hospital where doctors declared him dead, said a senior police officer.
He was the main witness in a murder case and was also the complainant in a case of murder of his friend Vijay in July.
Vijay was beaten to death by some people, he said.
Jeet lived with his family at B block of Jahangirpuri. He worked as a labourer, along with his father, at Azadpur Mandi, police said.
Jeet’s family told police that he was receiving death threats from the past few days because of being a murder complainant and witness.
A group of people gathered at the hospital where Jeet died, shouted slogans against police and also set on fire a slum dwelling in the area.
Police managed to pacify the angry mob and brought the situation under control. No casualty was reported in the fire set by them, said the officer.
However, a case of rioting was registered later by police but no one was arrested.
During investigation police detained two suspects who it believed were behind the murder of Jeet.
The duo are being questioned and efforts are being made to nab other persons involved in the murder, added the officer.
