Mumbai, January 18: The Mumbai Police today said there was an increase in the number of crime cases in the city last year.
“There was an increase in crime with population going up and more and more people coming in the city,” Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjeev Dayal told a press conference.
According to police data, there has been a decrease in dacoity cases in the city, though crimes like murder, attempt to murder, robbery, chain snatching and crime against women increased in 2010.
Police registered 33,645 crime cases in the city last year as against 30,987 cases in 2009. While 18,646 cases were detected in 2010, the number was 17, 509 its previous year.
There were 199 extortion cases last year against 198 in 2009. While 309 persons were arrested in 2009 for extortion, in 2010, the number stood at 313.
