Mumbai, August 10: In a major drug haul, police claimed to have seized 103 kgs of charas worth over Rs one crore from the city and arrested eight persons in this connection. Investigations are on to find out how much of the seized contrabrand was meant for the city.
Preliminary probe suggests the contraband was brought here from Jammu & Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh,” Additional Police Commissioner (Anti-Terrorism Squad) Parambir Singh said. “We are trying to find out if the charas was meant to be supplied to other cities in Maharashtra and neighbouring states via Mumbai,” he said.
Earlier acting on a tip off, police laid a trap and arrested Girishkumar Varma (28), Girjesh Varma (28) — hailing from Uttar Pradesh — , Saleem Babu Shaikh (38) and Abdulkarim Hussaine Shaikh (48) from the Western Express Highway in suburban Dahisar last evening. Girishkumar and Girjesh brought the consignment from Uttar Pradesh while Saleem and Abdulkarim, alleged drug peddlers from the city, were here to take delivery, Singh said, adding 75 kgs of charas hidden in a Tavera vehicle with Uttar Pradesh number plate was recovered from them.
A second trap was laid at Pydhonie in south Mumbai when three persons — Harish Pandit (30) of Jammu & Kashmir, Babu Khan (43) and Sikandar Khan (42) of Udaipur district in Rajasthan — were arrested. A total 25 kgs of charas, hidden in their Tavera vehicle with a Rajasthan number plate, has been seized, Singh said.
