Mumbai, July 07: With water levels in lakes supplying water to the city depleting fast, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has imposed a 30 per cent water cut uniformly across the metropolis beginning Tuesday.
“Because of the delay in the arrival of monsoon and with reservoirs and lakes drying up, we had to impose a 30 per cent water cut,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner Anil Diggikar.
The civic body said water supply to swimming pools and five-star hotels will be reduced and is also looking at Mumbai’s 1,400 borewells as a partial solution and techniques like rain water harvesting.
“The BMC will reduce supply to major consumers including five star hotels, industrial units, state offices, hospitals and privately-owned swimming pools,” Diggikar said.
Another civic official said an average swimming pool needs around 5 lakh litres of water while a small swimming pool requires at least one or two lakh litres.
Civic officials feel that despite heavy rains starting Friday night and continuing till Saturday, the city’s six catchments did not get the showers that could lessen the city’s water woes.
