Mumbai food outlets squabble over ‘BBC’ brand

Two food outlets in the Indian city of Mumbai are embroiled in a legal battle over the right to use the acronym BBC.

While the Borivali Biryani Centre claimed that it was the “original BBC” and demanded 100,000 dollars in damages, the Bombay Baking Company said it failed to see what the fuss was about, reported the BBC.

The root cause of the case appeared to be the fact that both the outlets answered calls with the greeting, “Hello BBC, what’s your order?”

The popular biryani centre alleged that it registered BBC as its trademark in 2002 and their staffs were trained to say they were from the BBC.

However, a spokesperson for the Bombay Baking Company, which is housed in the luxurious JW Marriott hotel , failed to see the connection between the two by saying that their names were different and they sold breads, croissants, cakes, pastries, salads, tea and coffee while the other BBC sold biryani.

A spokesman for the biryani centre said that he did not care if the acronym was also used by a top global broadcaster. He added, “That may be abroad – but in India we are the BBC.”

Meanwhile, the British Broadcasting Corporation ( BBC) press office in London has refused to comment on the case. (ANI)
