Hyderabad, October 07: With passengers having great difficulty to find parking space at the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS), Road Transport Corporation officials are looking to address this long-pending problem. They are planning to construct a dedicated multi-level parking facility.
“We have sent a proposal to construct a G+2 building where 1,000 two-wheelers can be parked easily,” APSRTC regional manager Ravinder Babu said. He also said if the proposal is approved, the parking facility could be in place by next year’s Dasara festival. Presently, during every festival season, passengers find it extremely difficult to park their vehicles even on weekends due to the rush. Though there has been demand from passengers for such a facility for a long time, officials failed to give it any notice.
“Yes it’s a serious problem and we are hoping to address it. If the proposal is cleared, work should commence immediately. We have sufficient space to construct a multi-level parking system for both two and four-wheelers,” Babu said.
Passengers who have four-wheelers are facing more problems, as it takes ages to reach the MGBS with heavy traffic congestion on the approach road. Adding to the problems of motorists, several RTC buses are parked on the road as they do not have enough parking space. A proposal by traffic police to widen the Gowliguda-Afzalgunj stretch to decongest traffic has not taken off.
At Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) also, passengers frequently face problem to park their vehicles conveniently. Both at the MGBS and JBS, RTC has outsourced the responsibility of managing parking lots to private persons.
