President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday expressed shock and anguish over the rape and brutality committed on a five-year-old girl, saying that urgent steps must be taken to bring the perpetrators to immediate justice.
In a statement, Mukherjee said: “I am shocked and deeply anguished at the latest incident of sexual assault and rape of a five year old child in Delhi. I join her family in praying for a speedy recovery and call upon concerned authorities to ensure the best possible medical attention for her.”
“Urgent steps must be taken to bring the perpetrators to immediate justice. As a society, we must introspect at the erosion of values and our repeated failure to ensure the security of our women and children. We must identify the causes and find solutions for such criminal depravity in our midst,” he said.
“Let us pledge to put all our energy and effort into ensuring that such aberrations which stain our moral fibre and standing as a society is prevented,” he added.
Meanwhile, the condition of the five-year-old girl, who was raped allegedly by a 22-year-old man after holding her captive in New Delhi, was stable.
Doctors attending to the victim at the AIIMS said the girl”s condition was stable. She was shifted to AIIMS on Friday evening.
The girl was abducted on April 15 and kept hostage in a flat owned by the attacker. He lived on the ground floor of the building in east Delhi”s Gandhi Nagar, in which the victim”s family also stayed.
The girl was rescued when members of her family heard her scream on Wednesday evening. (ANI)
