Mubarak will escape Egypt: Poll

Cairo, February 03: The results of an opinion poll suggest that the popular revolution in Egypt will force Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to escape from the country.

According to the poll carried out by Media, nearly 53 percent of respondents believed that Mubarak will flee the North African country.

The results indicated that 13 percent said that the unrest will be quelled with the support of the United States.

This is while 34 percent said that the Egypt revolution will bring about Mubarak’s collapse but the remnants of the system will still persist.

Egypt has entered the ninth day of revolution protests with people gathering in the Egyptian capital’s Tahrir Square from the early hours of Wednesday.

This comes as nearly 8 million of Egyptian protesters also rallied against the embattled Mubarak across the country on Tuesday.

The protesters want Mubarak to end his 30-year rule but he has so far defied widespread public calls for his resignation.

Protesters on Tuesday chanted “Leave Mubarak, leave you are not needed” and “Friday afternoon we will be at the palace,” referring to what they have named “The Friday of Departure”, a march to the presidential palace that protesters had said they would carry out if Mubarak did not step down.

The Egyptian long-time president, however, said Tuesday that he won’t leave Egypt.

“This is my country. This is where I lived, I fought and defended its land, sovereignty and interests, and I will die on its soil,” Mubarak said.

He said that he would not run in the election scheduled to be held in September but said he would stay in office until then.
