Mubarak, sons to stand trial

Cairo, June 02: Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has been scheduled for trial on August 3, on charges of being responsible for the death of protesters and fraud.

According to a Wednesday statement, Mubarak along with his two sons, Gamal and Alaa, and businessman Hussein Salem are set to go on trial.

Mubarak is charged with the intentional killing of protesters during the 18-day long revolution beginning in January, the illegal acquisition of wealth, selling the Egyptian natural gas to Israel at extremely low prices, and squandering state funds, a Media correspondent reported.

The statement also accuses Mubarak of allowing Hussein Salem to seize hundreds of thousands of acres of state-owned land in the wealthy resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Egypt’s former petroleum minister Sameh Fahmi as well as some other ministry officials are accused of helping Salem gain access to illegal financial benefits of over USD 2 billion, by assigning Salem’s company to sell the country’s natural gas to Israel at cheap prices.

Mubarak’s sons are accused of being involved in furthering Salem’s affairs in return for real estate.

According to the judicial sources, Mubarak could face a death penalty if found guilty of killing anti-regime protesters during the Egyptian revolution.

Over 800 people were killed during the revolution which led to the eventual fall of Mubarak in February.

Egyptian protesters have promised to continue their demonstrations until their demands for social reforms are met. The protesters are also demanding the army to hand over power to a civilian-ruled government.
