A Muslim scrap dealer was arrested by the Koramangala police on theft charges, died under mysterious circumstances at the Victoria Hospital here on August 31.
Mubarak Pasha (37) a resident of Lakshman Rao (LR) Nagar was taken into custody from his residence by the Koramangala police on August 19. Though his family managed to get his bail on August 30, he was not released because KR market police was also looking for him in another case.
The issue came to notice, when one of the family members learnt that Mubarak was in police custody. The police showed his arrest and produced him in court on August 27. The court had remanded him in judicial custody.
Speaking to the press persons, Reshma Pasha, Mubarak’s wife , alleged that the police picked up Mubarak on charges of robbing a gold chain. She also alleged that the police had beaten him to death.
During her visit to the police station, her husband told her that the police tortured and beat him from the time he was brought into custody. She also claimed that earlier the Koramangala police had denied the arrest of Mubarak.
The family received a call from the police station on August 31, that Pasha was admitted to the Victoria hospital because of certain health complications, she lamented and added that then they rushed to the hospital and found Mubarak’s body in the mortuary.
On the other hand, the prison authorities claimed that Mubarak died due to cardiac arrest. However, the Victoria Hospital police have taken it as a case of unnatural death and have sought magisterial inquest.
Whereas, ACP Shanth Kumar said that they arrested him on a robbery case and recovered the gold chain before he was taken to the judicial custody. The ACP also said that he was wanted in another case by the City Market police and before they could secure his custody, he died of cardiac arrest in the prison.
Later, the family members also staged a protest outside the Koramangala police station and wanted to file a criminal case against them at Victoria hospital police station but they refused to file an FIR.
Meanwhile, Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and Popular Front of India workers pressed upon the issue and urged the higher police authorities to investigate the issue. SDPI leader, Saqib told the media that nothing can be ascertained yet. We are waiting for the postmortem report for further action.Courtesy:Karnataka Muslims
