Vizinagaram, March 14: Polling for the MLC (graduate constituency) held on Sunday in Vizianagaram district passed off peacefully. According to preliminary reports received by District Revenue Officer Assistant Returning Officer Y. Narasimha Rao, out of a total 40,739 voters, only 20,261 have exercised their franchise thus registering a percentage of 49.7.
Many a number of graduates were seen complaining that their names were not in the list.
Incidentally, Lok Sabha member Botcha Jhansi Lakshmi was no exception. Dr. Jhansi could not cast her vote at the polling station in Maharajah’s College (Autonomous) in the morning. Her name was not traced at the facilitating centres which were opened near the polling stations to assist voters to find their names, serial number and polling station number. She said that prior to marriage her surname in the degree certificate was “Majji”. “I could not avail my privilege. Except my name, names all other members of her family were intact,” she regretted. Collector M. Veerabrahmaiah along with his wife Vijayalakshmi cast their votes at M.R. Sanskrit College.
Later, he visited various polling centres in the town and in Denkada, Nellimarla and Poosapatirega mandals.
