MPs can’t man railway crossings: Jaitley

New Delhi, August 13: “Members of Parliament are not specialists in manning the unmanned railway crossings,” Leader Opposition Arun Jaitley told Minister of State for Railways E Ahammed today, advising him to go for professionals.

Agitated over his BJP colleague Rajiv Pratap Rudy not getting a satisfactory reply from Ahammed during Question Hour in Rajya Sabha, Jaitley suggested that the Railways has to get professionals to do the job of manning the unmanned crossings.

He said the minister “has tried to cover up” Rudy’s point.

Rudy had pointedly asked whether the government will involve private firms for the job.

Ahammed then said guarding the unmanned railway crossings is a sensitive issue and the Railways would not give it to private companies.

There are 17,000 unmanned level crossings in the railways and the ministry wants to guard all of them by March 2015.
