MPs call for clarification of Mortazavi case

Tehran, January 18: Fifty-five MPs plan to send a letter to the president and Judiciary chief demanding clarification on the case of former Tehran prosecutor general Saeed Mortazavi.

The letter will soon be sent to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani, MP Zohreh Elahian told the Fars news agency on Sunday.

Elahian, who is a member of the Majlis special committee on the post-election incidents, said that the Kahrizak detention center events were a disgrace to the Islamic Republic.

A parliamentary report issued on January 10 criticized Mortazavi for sending 147 inmates to the Kahrizak detention center last summer.

According to the report of the parliamentary investigation into the Kahrizak incidents, despite the fact that officials of Evin prison had announced that the facility had space for the detainees, Mortazavi insisted on sending the 147 detainees to Kahrizak, which is located south of Tehran.

Mortazavi, who is now the deputy national prosecutor general, has rejected the charges.

On Saturday, Mortazavi wrote a letter to Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, a copy of which was published by the Fars news agency.

In the letter, he said that he could not have ordered the transfer of 147 detainees to the Kahrizak prison because he was on leave at the time.

Three young men died under suspicious circumstances at the Kahrizak detention center last summer.
