MP fails to find name in voters list

Hyderabad, March 14: Congress MP from Vizianagaram Botcha Jhansi could not exercise her franchise for the poll to the Vizianagaram-Srikakulam-Visakhapatnam Graduates Constituency of the Legislative Council on Sunday.

Reports reaching here said Ms. Jhansi visited the polling station in the Maharaja College in Vizianagaram but failed to find her name. The disappointed MP said she had registered as a voter prior to her marriage and that her surname was Majhi in the degree certificate.

“Except my name, names of all other members of my family are intact,” she pointed out.

However, an official of the office of the Chief Electoral Officer said the MP had not registered as a voter for the Graduates constituency.

High voter turnout of teachers and poor interest shown by graduates marked the polling to six Graduates and Teachers constituencies of the Legislative Council on Sunday. Elections to Srikakulam-Vizianagaram-Visakhapatnam; Prakasam-Nellore- Chittoor and Kadapa-Anantapur-Kurnool Graduates constituencies, Prakasam-Nellore-Chittoor; Kadapa-Anantapur-Kurnool and Mahabubnagar-Ranga Reddy-Hyderabad Teachers constituencies were held on Sunday.

Polling passed off without any incident with voters of the Graduates constituencies showing little interest. As a result, the average polling stood at 46.73 per cent for the Graduates constituencies, while it was 77 per cent for the Teachers constituencies.

In the Graduates constituency, 52.77 per cent voters exercised their franchise in Prakasam-Nellore-Chittoor, followed by 47.23 per cent in Srikakulam-Vizianagaram-Visakhapatnam and 39.60 per cent in Kadapa-Anantapur-Kurnool.
