Mother sells newborn daughter for Rs 7,000 in Dhanbad

Dhanbad (Jharkhand): A mother of five allegedly sold her newborn daughter for Rs 7,000 to a childless woman due to poverty at Patliputra Medical College (PMCH) here, official said today. Dulali Devi (40), gave birth to twins, a son and a daughter, in gynaecology ward of PMCH on Sunday evening, a PMCH official said. Child Welfare Committee chairperson Nita Sinha said Dulali yesterday “sold” her new-born daughter to childless woman Shahida Khatoon for Rs 7,000.

However, on intervention of the CWC, the infant was reunited with the mother within 24 hours. While the baby was brought back, “I have called Shahida Katoon to the CWC office on July 21,” Sinha said. Meanwhile, PMCH has set up an enquiry committee to probe the report of sale of an infant by parents in the hospital. PMCH Superintendent Dr Ranjan Pandey said initial reports suggested that no hospital staff was involved in any such act.

However, an inquiry has been ordered to look into how such incident took place in the hospital. Dulali, a mother of three children, admitted to the CWC and hospital authorities that she was forced to do so as she was not in a position to raise five children. Her husband works in a rolling mills and struggles to feed the members of the family, Dulali added.
