New Delhi, December 22: A Delhi court today awarded rigorous life imprisonment to a woman for strangling to death her baby daughter within hours of its birth at a city hospital in 2007, saying it was the “shocking” incident.
“I am of the view that she is not entitled to any leniency because due to the act of the convict, the phenomena of love between the mother and the daughter has been destroyed,” Additional Sessions Judge Suresh Chand Rajan of a fast track court said in his judgement.
The court, which fell short of awarding death penalty to 27-year-old Manju on the ground that the offence did not fall in the rarest of rare category, relied on the testimonies of various nursing and other staff of the Lady Harding Medical college.
