UP most unsafe for women and children: Report

The Akhilesh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh is not in good news.

Women as well as children are the most unsafe in the state of UP under the rule of Akhilesh Yadav, according to a report, released by the Union Home Ministry.

The report, `Crime In India 2013′ released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) says incidents of rape in UP in 2013 risen by over a whopping 50% compared to 2012.

Last year, UP has reported 3050 rapes compared to 1963 rapes reported in the state in 2012. The present figure of rapes in UP is the highest ever for the state which is wrestling with horrific cases of crime against women like the rape and murder of two minor girls in Badaun.

The number of total crimes reported against women in UP (including molestation, murder, kidnapping and dowry deaths) have also increased by almost 50% with 32546 such cases being reported in 2013 against 23569 such cases the last year, the NCRB report says.

UP has nearly 9.8 crore of a female population, the NCRB report mentions citing RGI census data of year 2013.

The highest number of crimes against children was reported in UP than any other state in the country, the NCRB report mentions. Last year, 9857 crimes have been reported against children in UP, contributing to over 16% of the country-wide figure of crimes against children, the home ministry report says.

A senior Uttar Pradesh police officer however told that the NCRB figures should be seen in the “correct perspective“ as the state still has a lower crime rate than other states, given its mushrooming population.

The NCRB figures for 2013 also say that the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have reported more incidents of rape than UP last year BJP ruled Madhya Pradesh reported the maximum number of 4335 rapes in the country last year whereas Congress ruled Maharashtra reported 3063 rapes.

Rajasthan which was under Congress rule in 2013, also reported more rapes than UP with 3285 rapes. When it comes to the figure of total crimes against women, Andhra Pradesh has reported a figure which is somewhat higher than that of Uttar Pradesh.
