Lucknow: A BJP MLA along with a Hindu community stopped Muslims from reconstructing a 200- year old mosque in Simbhaoli constituency of Devli village, Urdu daily Rashtriya Sahara has reported.

According to the daily, the 200-year old mosque in Devli village was also used by the Muslims from nearby villages, Akhapur, Fatehpur, Nichdi and Dhana, in the area with no mosque there.

The mosque needed reconstruction due to its old age. Two months ago the villagers demolished the building and laid the foundation of a new mosque.

BJP MLA Kamal Singh Malik reached the spot along with a crowd of his followers and asked Muslims to stop the construction then and there and also warned them that they will be allowed to go ahead with the construction, only if they bring written permission from the administration.

Earlier villagers had warned that at no cost would the reconstruction be allowed.

Youths belonging to the majority community assembled outside the houses of Muslims late at night and shouted slogans of “Jai Shri Ram”.

Muslims have filed a complaint with the District Magistrate Anil Dingra requesting an action against the trouble makers. He has ordered Deputy Superintendent of Police Satish Chand Pandey to conduct an enquiry into the incident.

Despite the tense situation, the Magistrate, has not given any order regarding the reconstruction of the mosque.
