Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday charged the Election Commission with “showing-off”, saying its decision to issue a show-cause notice to her based on her announcement of upgrading Asansol to a district was not based on correct information.
“You can’t say it is a strict step. Sometimes there is a show in show-cause. I support show-cause for the right reason but if there is a political bias as well as political vendetta then we will say our thing,” she told a TV channel here when asked on how she was going to deal with the “strict step” taken by the commission.
Asserting the Asansol district formation is “nothing new” and is a “three-month old” decision, Banerjee, also the Trinamool Congress supremo, said: “You have to know what is right before you say it.”
Asked on whether she will respond sharply to the notice, she said: “I don’t understand strong… what is fair, I do.”
The commission on Friday said it is examining speeches made by Banerjee as reactions to the show-cause notice issued by the poll panel.
Banerjee on Thursday went all guns blazing against the Commission which show-caused her for violation of the model code of conduct.
