Moral and civic education to be compulsory in institutions: HRD Ministry

In order to promote moral and civic education, Union Minister for Human Resource Development Smriti Irani on Wednesday passed an order to make it mandatory in all schools and colleges.

All schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will follow the order.

According to a release by the HRD Ministry, all National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks will have themes and examples related to moral conduct. Value education will also be initiated in the syllabi. In addition, the NCERT has developed a resource book for teachers called ‘Ways to Peace’.

The release further stated that all students will be assessed on the subjects in the final examinations.

Autonomous universities are free to draw up their syllabi and curricula. However, the University Grants Commission (UGC) will fund various programmes at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels concerning human rights and value education in universities and colleges. (ANI)
