Monsoon fury in Assam, Konkan

Mumbai, July 19: The flood situation in Assam continued to remain grim, Tuesday, with the Brahmaputra and its tributaries continuing to flow above the danger mark. Heavy to very heavy rains are also causing havoc in the Konkan region of Maharashtra.

In Assam over 300 people were rendered homeless in four districts – Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Golaghat – due to the rising water. The low-lying areas of Kaziranga National Park, home to the one-horned rhino, have also submerged.

The Konkan region of Maharashtra is also experiencing heavy rains for the past few days with rivers like Savitri and Kundalika flowing close to the danger mark but the situation is said to be under control.

However, the heavy rains, particularly between Ratnagiri and Nivsar, led to disruption of train services on the Konkan Railway route, with water and slush accumulating on tracks at Pomendi between Ratnagiri and Nivsar section.

Nine trains were cancelled today, while routes of many others were diverted.

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in an update, yesterday, said that the southwesterly monsoon flows across the equator are continued to drive themselves to a new peak over Arabian Sea and south peninsular India for the second day.

A weather warning said that heavy to very heavy rainfall would break out at a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls over Konkan and Goa today before relenting.

Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall would also occur over coastal Karnataka, Kerala, south Gujarat, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and the Northeastern States.
