Monkeys turn violent: Elderly man stoned to death

Meerut: A 72-year old man in UP was stoned to death by monkeys when he went to collect dried wood for Havan.

The incident is reported to have taken place in UP’s Tikri village in Baghpat where a bunch of monkeys threw stones at the elderly man hurting his head and chest, TOI reports.

The elderly man died in the hospital while undergoing treatment said the police.

The family members lodged a complaint with the Police and named the monkeys as the accused in their complaint. However, looking at the peculiar incident and the accused, the Police registered the matter as an accident.

The family is now approaching higher authorities for the justice for their deceased family member.

According to Krishnapal Singh, the deceased’s brother, “Monkeys threw more than 20 bricks at Dharampal on Thursday. He was hit on the head, chest and legs. Thrown from quite a height, the bricks were enough to kill him. These rogue monkeys are the real culprits and must pay for it. We have given a written complaint against monkeys but police don’t seem to be convinced enough to convert it into an FIR.”

The monkeys in the vicinity have become a nuisance for the villagers who are being harmed in some way or the other.

“The attack on Dharampal could be the worst case, but monkeys have made life difficult for villagers here and there doesn’t seem to be any solution in sight,” another villager Bheema Kashyap said.

SHO Chitwan Singh, Doghat police station, looking at the incident asked: “How can we register the case against monkeys? This will make us a laughingstock. I don’t think it is a logical demand. We were definitely informed of the bizarre accident and we registered it in our case diary after which a post-mortem was also conducted.”

Similar attacks by monkeys are reportedly rising across the country and according to wildlife experts, attacks such as these, are usually launched by rhesus macaque monkeys.
