Mom at 74: Woman delivers twin girls in Andhra’s Guntur

For the first time in India, a 74-year-old woman has delivered twins at a hospital in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur town on Thursday.

Erramatti Mangamma, who conceived through the In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) process, delivered twin babies at the Ahalya Nursing Home here.

A team comprising four doctors performed the cesarean operation. S. Umashankar, who headed the team of doctors, said both the mother and the babies were doing well.

Hailing from Nelapartipadu in East Godavari district, Mangamma and her husband Errmatti Raja Rao, 80, got married on March 22, 1962. They were childless for 54 years of marriage.

She, along with her husband went to many doctors and hospitals but nothing worked.

However, in November 2018, they  had approached the IVF experts at the nursing home, where Dr Shanakkayala Umashankar decided to help the couple.

“This lady has no history of ailments like BP, Sugar and the genetic line is very good. After a thorough examination involving cardiologists, pulmonologists among other specialty doctors, we decided to go ahead. She attained the menopause stage long ago but through IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) we got her periods back in just one month,” Dr Shanakkayala Umashankar told Zee News.

The doctors regularly kept a watch on Mangayamma’s condition. The nursing home even arranged a felicitation of the couple before the delivery.
