Modify polavaram project design: Karat

Strongly opposing the design of Polavaram Project, the CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat on Friday urged the government to modify the design to minimize the loss to the tribal.
Speaking at a meet-the-press programme here, Prakash Karath reminded that strong objections were arising on the present design of Polavaram projects. It would also create problems to thousands of tribal, he added. The present design was irrelevant and not in suit with the requirements, he felt.
“Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments should hold consultations to resolve disputes on water and power” he suggested.
He also charged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi with trying to remove control on the prices of fuels. This measure would befit the corporate companies rather than common people, he felt.
He alleged that Modi government has failed to contain inflation and some of its recent decisions like rail charges hike have caused burdened the common man. He also pointed out the news in a section of media over possible hike of prices of LPG cylinder.
He expressed apprehension saying the NDA government may cut short funds for the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).
He said that the left parties have failed to show strong presence in the recent elections as black money played a crucial role. The CPI (M) would try to regain its earlier glory by taking up agitations on public issues, he added. (NSS)
