Modi Govt. targets another IPS officer

Ahmedabad, August 12: After Sanjiv Bhatt, another Gujarat IPS officer Rahul Sharma has earned the wrath of the Narendra Modi government in connection with 2002 riots probe, with authorities issuing a show-cause notice to him asking why he should not be chargesheeted for giving CDs of calls made during the violence to various agencies including the Special Investigation Team.

Mr. Sharma, a DIG rank officer, on Thursday filed a petition in the Gujarat High Court challenging the State’s decision of not providing him the “grounds” on which he was served the show-cause on February 5 over the CD. The petition was on Thursday mentioned before Justice Abhilasha Kumari, who has posted it for Friday.

The State government may contemplate action against Mr. Sharma after the notice period ended on Thursday, officials said.

Mr. Sharma, who was posted in Ahmedabad during the 2002 post-Godhra riots, had given the CDs containing phone call records of the riots to various agencies, including the Nanavati Commission and the SIT.

In his petition, Mr. Sharma had said that he had asked the State government on what grounds he was issued the show-cause, but the State government denied him the information. He had also filed an application under the Right to Information Act seeking details of the grounds on which the notice was served on him.

If action is taken against Mr. Sharma, he will be the second one to face music after Mr. Bhatt, an IPS officer, who was suspended on Tuesday after he was locked in a confrontation with the Modi government over post-Godhra riots.
