Mock drills teach students emergency response

Hyderabad, July 17: In order to sensitise schoolchildren, teachers and school managements on fire safety, mock fire drills were conducted in 11 schools in the twin cities on Friday.

During the drills, conducted by the fire prevention wing of the GHMC in association with the state disaster response and fire service department, students were taught emergency procedures like evacuating people in case of a fire, bomb threat or collapse of building.

They were told to evacuate in a single line from the nearest exit in a silent and orderly manner and walk briskly to the assembly place without overtaking others.

They were shown how to crawl on the ground to escape smoke. If people were held up in a room in a fire accident, wet blankets/towels should be kept under the door, windows should be opened and help should be sought, the students were informed.

They were informed that lifts should not be used to escape from fire as people were likely to get stuck between the floors due to power failure or get suffocated due to smoke.

The drills were conducted at St Paul’s English Medium School, Hyderguda, Vasavi School, Himayathnagar, G.Pulla Reddy Memorial School, Dilshuknagar, St.Joseph’s High School, Habsiguda, Secunderabad Public School, Secunderabad, St. Pious High School, Ram Nagar, Arobindo International School, Shivam Road, Burgula Ram Krishna Rao High School, Narayanguda, Keshava Memorial School, Narayanguda, Key’s High School, Secunderabad and Sharada Vidyalaya, Malakpet.
