MNS members attack Airtel outlet

Mumbai, March 09: Five suspected members of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) today smashed the glass of an Airtel outlet here to protest the private telecom major’s alleged failure to use Marathi language prominently in a customer interactive system, police said.

The system, Interactive Voice Response (IVR), is a recording mechanism used by customers for assistance relating to their phone services.

According to Senior Inspector Prakash George, the five came on bikes and pelted stones at the entrance glass of the outlet in suburban Bandra before speeding away.

The employees at the outlet told the police they had received a letter two weeks ago from the Raj Thackeray-led party asking them to include Marathi in their IVR as the first language. The letter had been forwarded to Airtel headquarters.

The stones were wrapped in MNS flags, the employees told the police.

No arrest has been made so far in connection with the incident.
