MLA Langate, Engineer Rashid is not new to controversy

New Delhi, Oct.19 : Engineer Sheikh Abdul Rashid , an Independent MLA of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly who was attacked with ink at Press Club here today is no new to controversy. He came to limelight first when the new PDP-BJP government took charge by introducing a resolution in the first session of the assembly demanding mortal remains of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

Rashid served in the government of Jammu and Kashmir in its construction department as assistant engineer before he successfully contested for assembly in 2008 state polls as an independent candidate from Langate. He is popularly known as MLA Langate in the valley.

After getting elected as MLA for the first time, Rashid introduced a resolution in the Assembly in 2011 seeking clemency for Guru, which garnered no support from any political party.

He became popular in his second tenure after getting elected in 2014 as an independent legislator who continuously disrupted Jammu and Kashmir assembly’s session accusing the ruling alliance PDP-BJP for carrying forward the agenda of the RSS. He even submitted a bill seeking revocation of a 1862 law in the state that bans slaughter, sale and possession of beef.

Engineer was beaten up recently in the floor of the assembly by BJP MLAs for allegedly hosting a beef party. He was in Press Club of India here to hold a press conference in connection with the incident when he was attacked with ink. Two persons have been detained for the attack. A lesser known right wing group Hindu Sena has claimed responsibility for today’s attack. (ANI)
