Mixed response to Andhra Pradesh bandh called by TDP

Hyderabad, December 20: The bandh called by main Andhra Pradesh’s opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) to protest the arrest of its fasting President N Chandrababu Naidu today evoked mixed response across the state.

The statewide shutdown, supported by Left parties, was by and large peaceful, police sources said.

Naidu, on an indefinite hunger strike for the last three days to demand higher compensation for rain-hit farmers, was taken into custody by the police and forcibly shifted to NIMS Hospital here in the wee hours today.

However, the former Chief Minister continued his fast in the government-run medical facility for the fourth day.

During the bandh, commercial establishments, hotels and private educational institutions remained closed in several parts of the state, they said.

Hundreds of TDP workers and leaders were taken into custody in various districts when they tried to enforce the bandh. The protesters stopped buses at many spots.
