MIT honours teen Muslim girl developing moon robot

Chennai, September 15: A fifteen-year-old Indian girl is busy working on a robot which can land on the moon, walk nearly 500 metres and scoop ice from the lunar surface. Hanaan Binth Hashim from Kozhikode, in Kerala, has also designed a launch vehicle model capable of taking spacecraft into the orbit of Mars.

The prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology has offered her a seat in aeronautical and astronautical engineering making her the first-ever Indian student to be admitted to the institute without tests or interviews.

A prodigy in theoretical astronomy, Hanaan is working on Absolute Theory of Zero which she says would throw more light on hitherto unheard-of universes.

With all natural resources fast depleting on earth, people are looking literally skywards, says Hanaan.

“The outer space is a big possibility. Astronomy, astrophysics and biotechnology will combine to form the future of science. Solutions to hundreds of diseases threatening the world will come from the science of astronomy,” Hanaan told Deccan Chronicle.
