Mistaking him for a thief, mob kills mentally-challenged man

Ahmedabas, July 25: The CID Crime from Vadodara is yet to investigate the killing of the three suspected thieves from Itwada in Pavi Jetpur taluka of Vadodara district, even as villagers in neighbouring Panchmahals have lynched to death a mentally-challenged man from Natanpura in the tribal-dominated Morwa Hadaf taluka, suspecting him to be a thief.

According to Sub-Inspector K B Kotwal, Takhtsinh Khant (32), the victim, had left his village on Thursday evening and had reached Natapura where some of the villagers, suspicious of his movement, killed him on the spot.

“The victim, Takhtsinh went inside the house of a woman who was cooking food. When she saw him, she shouted for help and the villagers rushed in and bashed him up, killing him,” said Panchmahals Superintendent of Police J R Mothaliya.

Kotwal, who is investigating the case, said the deceased was taken to the Godhra Civil Hospital where he was identified.

“Later, his mother, Jamunaben, said that the deceased had left his house on several such occasions earlier. But on Thursday, he left in the evening without any trace and they were about to lodge a complaint,” added Kotwal.
