The body of a sub-inspector, who allegedly went ‘missing’ on July 28 from Akhnoor was today recovered from Pakistan and was handed over to the district police, an official here said. “The body of Sub-Inspector Sunil Khajuria, was recovered by the Pakistani Rangers after it was washed away in River Chenab under mysterious circumstances on July 28 in Akhnoor area,” a senior police official here told UNI. He said the Pakistani Rangers flashed a message on Indian side on a hotline regarding recovery of a decomposed body from River Chenab following which a team from Police Station Khour rushed to the spot. “The body was handed over to the police at Gigrayal Post this afternoon at around 1400 hrs in Khour area,” an official added and said the Rangers also handed over the keys of his car found from his uniform. Sunil’s car JK02AV-3336 was found parked on a bridge over River Chenab on the day of the incident. “Though the body was partially decomposed, but with the recovery of keys, his identity was ascertained,” police officer added and said he was cremated this evening at Gharota. Police on July 28 registered a missing report on a complaint lodged by his family and the investigations started. “Sunil was last seen near River Chenab by an Army jawan posted at a check post few metres away from the bridge,” police said. “It is not yet clear whether it was an accident, suicide or a murder,” police said, adding that the investigations are in progress. Sunil was recruited in the Jammu and Kashmir Police in place of his father, who sacrificed his life while fighting militants in an encounter in 2009. UNI
