Missing Kashmiri student joins militant ranks, claims social media

SRINAGAR: Social media post on Friday evening claimed that 17-year-old Kashmiri student who went missing from a private university in Greater Noida last week joins militant ranks in Jammu and Kashmir.

Ahtesham Bilal Sofi went missing from his college since October 28 days after he was mistakenly roughed up during a scuffle between Indian and Afghan students in the campus.

On Sunday evening October 28, the student left the varsity with official permission on a sight-seeing trip to Delhi.

According to Indian Express reports, the six-minute audio appeared on the internet along with a picture of Ehtisham dressed in a black outfit claimed he purportedly announces joining militant group Islamic State Jammu and Kashmir (ISJK).

Munir Ahmad Khan, J&K Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Law and Order and Security told the newspaper that the department is verifying the authenticity of the photo and audio that went viral.

Ahtesham, a first year student of Bachelors in Medical Imaging Technology (BMIT) at Noida’s Sharda University is a resident of downtown Srinagar. His father, Bilal Ahmad Sofi is a businessman.
