Speaking to media persons, the Congress leaders said that the plates were allegedly destroyed by a a mob of about 1,000 people at Agasanur village, Kosgi mandal in Kurnool district.
The mob had allegedly resorted to vandalism after the government decision to release water to the RDS canal from August 20.
The incident comes a day after members of the Srikrishna Committee visited the project as part of their field visits.
Meanwhile, Telangana Rashtra Samithi president K Chandrasekhar Rao condemned the damage and termed it as an ‘anti-Telangana’ act.
He demanded that the Chief Minister immediately take action against the culprits and said that the situation is giving a rise to tension between people of Rayalaseema and Telangana.
KCR wondered if the government would have remained inactive if someone had committed the same act on the Sunkesula project.
The Mahabubnagar Collector meanwhile sought to assure the people that there was no leakage of water due to the damage.
He informed Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah that work was on to repair the damage.
