New Haven (Connecticut) [USA]: In what would serve as a confidence booster for Sania Mirza ahead of the US Open, the Indian tennis ace and her Romanian partner Monica Niculescu have lifted this year’s Connecticut Open trophy with a straight sets victory in the finals of the women’s doubles event.
The Indo-Romanian pair, who recently joined forces, registered a 7-5, 6-4 win over Ukrainian-Taiwanese pair of Kateryna Bondarenko and Chuang Chia-Jung in the summit clash that lasted one hour and 30 minutes.
It was Mirza’s 39th title of her illustrious career and seventh this year.
Sania and Niculescu had earlier teamed up way back in 2010, when they reached the quarterfinals of the Western and Southern Open before calling time on the partnership.
The Indian star also partnered with Barbora Strycova of Czech Republic at the Cincinnati Masters last week and won their debut tournament by defeating former partner Martina Hingis and American Coco Vandeweghe. (ANI)
