Mumbai, April 10: A 19-year-old boy miraculously escaped unhurt even after his car crashed on to the Worli seaface promenade before it turned turtle thrice in the early hours of Friday.
Jai Goel, a student of Podar College, and his friend Rounak went for a drive to Worli seaface at 2.30 am when Goel lost control of his Honda Accord while speeding. According to an eyewitnesses, Goel – son of a steel company owner and resident of Worli – crashed into two promenade benches before stopping a few meters away from the promenade boundary.
“Goel was driving at 70 kmph and if there had been a crowd at the spot, he would have killed pedestrians,” said Atul Patel, an eyewitness. “He was lucky that the car stopped right before the boundary or else it would have plunged into the sea.”
Goel had asked his driver Mukesh Jat to wait at the promenade and took the car for a drive. “There were three cars racing at the promenade but after the accident, they disappeared. The car was in high speed and so the impact of the crash was great,” said another eyewitness. But police deny a drag race. “There was no drag race going on nor was Goel a part of any such race,” said Bharat Worlikar, senior police inspector of Worli police station.
No one was hurt in the accident, the police said. “We have not arrested him Goel as nobody was injured. We have charged and fined him Rs 5,000 for the damages,” said Worlikar.
