Teachers of a school provided sanctuary to a nine-year-old student who wanted to be a teacher after they and the police failed to convince her mother that she wanted to carry on her studies and did not wish to marry the man chosen for her.
The teachers of Quince Girls High School here after speaking with the mother of the 15-year-old student Rumpi
Ghosh at her home at Bahadurpur village decided that she would stay in the girls’ hostel and continue her
studies.
The teachers had taken the girl, to the Kotwali Women police station Officer-in-charge Aparajita Banerjee after she fled her home this morning to tell her teachers that she did not want to marry the 40-year-old labourer that her mother had chosen for her.
The OC said, “Her mother arranged her marriage most probably on July one. I failed to make her mother understand
that her daughter was not interested in marriage and wanted to carry on her studies.”
A teacher Tanyi De Sarkar said, “Rumpi didn’t want to live with her mother who was angry that she had brought the
police.
She will stay in our school hostel and continue her studies. All the teachers have decided to help her
financially,” she said.
SDO, Krishnagar (Sadar) Sabyasachi Sarkar said, “I will call her in my office and take steps so that she can
continue her studies.”
Police sources said that the student came from a poor family with her mother the only earning member as her father had died.
