Ministry of Earth Sciences celebrates foundation day

New Delhi, July 27: The Ministry of Earth Sciences celebrated the foundation day here at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi today.

On foundation day, the National Award for Ocean Sciences and Atmospheric Sciences to be given away by Chief Guest, Prithviraj Chavan, Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences (IC).

Dr. K. Kasturirangan, Member, Planning Commission delivered the foundation day lecture.

In addition, Certificate of Merit for young scientists/engineers for outstanding contributions, best employee awards, science quiz prizes and prizes for drawing competitions are also to be given to mark the occasion.

The Department of Ocean Development created as an independent scientific Department on July 27, 1981 by then Prime Minister Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi, reorganized as Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), which came into being on 12th of July 2007.

The ministry has departments like the Department of Ocean Development, India Meteorological Department, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology & National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting.

The Ministry of Earth Sciences aims to create a framework for understanding the complex interaction among key elements of the Earth System, namely ocean atmosphere and solid earth by encompassing the existing national programmes in meteorology, climate, environment and seismology.
