Mining near BIT campus leads to protest

Students of Bearys Institution of Technology (BIT), Innoli protested against the mining activity going on in a quarry near the institution on January 28.

The students complained that the noise and air pollution caused in the campus, due to proximity of mining, was affecting their studies and also causing health hazards. They also said that ponds dug in the area as part of the mining process have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Dr S A Khan, principal BIT said that the college and students of the institute were facing several problems because the land owner had begun quarrying for red stones near the educational institute. The heavy machinery used for quarrying generates a lot of noise and dust which may lead to respiratory problems in students and others living in the surrounding areas.

He also said that the geology and mining department had inspected and warned the quarry owner to stop mining activity. Inspite of it, the drilling process has been restarted and continues upto late in the night.

Several students of the institution protested along with Mr. Sainath director, Dr Raikar, founder principal and other faculty members.Courtesy: Karnataka Muslims
