Puducherry, August 26: Following the footsteps of neighbouring Tamil Nadu, Puducherry Government today hiked the price of milk by Rs two per litre in the union territory.
The price of milk sold by Cooperative Milk Producers Union (PONLAIT) had been revised from Rs 18 to Rs 20 and the procurement price had also been hiked from Rs 14.50 a litre to Rs 16.50, Welfare Minister M Kandasamy announced in the assembly.
Initially he announced a Rs three hike to Rs 21 but modified it at the instance of Chief Minister V Vaithilingam.
Tamil Nadu Government had earlier this week increased the price of milk sold by state-owned AAVIN ranging from Rs 1.25 to Rs 2.50 per litre for different varieties.
Opposition AIADMK legislators A Anbalagan and Ohm Sakthi Segar staged a walk out protesting the increase in price of milk.
Kandasamy, who is also incharge of Civil Supplies, said above poverty line category families would get rice at Re one a kilo with a maximum of 10 kgs. The `below poverty line` families are getting ten kilo rice free of cost.
All families covered under the ration card system (both the APL and BPL families) would be issued two kilo sugar free of cost during the forthcoming Diwali festival as was done in the past.
