Militants attack Samangi airbase, one dead

Security officials on Thursday night thwart a militant attack at the heavily-guarded Samangi airbase and the International Airport in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s Balochistan province, reports stated.

According to reports four attacker has been killed and two policemen were wounded during the exchange of fire between militants and security officials.

The military sources confirmed that the airport in Quetta came under attack.

Seven to eight explosions were reportedly heard in the city. However, their nature could not be ascertained. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

In a tweet, the Civil Aviation Authority, CAA Pakistan said that flight operation at Quetta Int’l Airport will remain suspended until further notice.

Armed militants first fired rockets from a Nallah near the airbase and then tried to storm the complex but were repulsed by security forces, officials said.

TV channels reported that firing was going on and hand grenades were also hurled towards the airbase and airport – located in the west of the city.

According to a Dawn report, a senior police official said, “At least one attacker has been killed while three security personnel have been injured in the firing.”

He further said that the additional security forces had cordoned off the area while the injured had been rushed to the Bolan Medical complex in Quetta.
