Mild tension in Purana Pul over defiling of religious place

Mild tension prevailed in Purana Pul area of Old City here in the early hours after a religious place was allegedly desecrated by some unidentified persons even as police arrested one person in connection with the incident.

According to Hussaini Alam Police, some unknown persons gained entry into the place of worship after breaking its metal gate (grills) around midnight and inflicted minor damage to the idols.

Police suspect that these persons were property offenders and entered the religious place in a drunken state with an intention to steal gold ornaments and cash and in the process they damaged some idols, a senior officer attached with Special Branch said.

According to police, the act seems to be the handiwork of some burglars and there was no mischief or role of any vested interests behind the incident.

The priest of the religious place, who happened to visit the place in the early hours, noticed the broken gate and damage to the idols even as a group of persons belonging to a particular community gathered in large numbers protesting against the incident.

Hussaini Alam Police Inspector A Balaji said the situation is now totally peaceful and they have arrested one person identified only as Periya, a native of Mahabubnagar district of Telangana, in connection with the incident.

“We have arrested one person Periya who was found in a drunken condition and he is being further questioned,” the Inspector said.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Periya is being further questioned to determine the location of other absconding persons believed to be responsible for the incident, the police officer said.
